Presented by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the 2009 Light the Night Walk® is a fund and awareness raising event dedicated to honoring and helping those people whose lives were affected by blood cancer. Ms. Purcell, a participant in the Cambridge Who’s Who lifetime program, encourages other members to partake in the benevolent walkathon by registering to walk (individually or as part of a team), volunteer or donate funds online.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Since 1949, the organization has raised funds for lifesaving research and patient services. They have continually strived to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families. Additionally, they serve as a hub of facts and information that includes a call center and listings to obtain financial support.
This year, the Light the Night Walk® is committed to generating $1 Million in donations. To contribute substantially, KSA Management, Inc. have set a goal to raise $10,000 before October 3rd. They are selling Light the Night Teddy Bears manufactured by Plushland for $10.00 a pop; each comes dressed in a Light the Night shirt and holding an illuminated balloon.
The day of the walkathon, drinks and entertainment will be provided. There are no fitness requirements or age limits. Each walker receives an illuminated balloon, color-categorized to denote what the fundraiser means to each person: survivors get white balloons, supporters get red balloons and gold balloons go to those walking in remembrance of a lost loved one.
To learn more about the walk, please visit the Light the Night Website and go to the KSA Management Team Page once you are ready to make a donation. For more information about Ms. Purcell, please view Karie Purcell's Cambridge Who’s Who Connect Profile. “Raaof” is the title of the book written by Cambridge Who’s Who lifetime member Joanne Calcagno, which was released via BookSurge Publishing. The quality read, which is geared toward youngsters aged 6-9 years old, focuses on Raaof, a Yemen boy who immigrates to Flushing, NY and must acclimate to being an outsider with a different cultural background. He meets a teacher, Mrs. Wright, who helps him to overcome the obstacles of reaching out to and becoming friendly with his peers.
The book has achieved positive responses from people who work in academics and social work. “Raaof teaches children not to be judgmental and compartmentalize people in the same category as those who committed atrocities against the US,” remarks one social worker who had stumbled upon the quality read. She states that the book is a good read for fourth and fifth graders, as it encourages understanding and openness towards other cultures.
